Even before the First World War, the "long pistol 08" was introduced for the German field artillery with a 20 cm long barrel and curve sight up to 800 m. With a shoulder stock it could be used carbine-like for close defense of the firing position. In World War I it was also used as an effective weapon in trench warfare with a 32-round drum magazine.
The company Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken AG in Berlin and Karlsruhe was one of the most important companies for the production of handguns and handguns and ammunition worldwide from about 1900 until 1918. Rifles of the Mauser 98 system were exported mainly to Latin America and the development of the Parabellum pistol by the Austrian Georg Luger took place at DWM in Berlin.
