The cylinder in the gun of our specimen is smooth and patinated, while the enclosed interchangeable drum is engraved with floral and animal motifs. Company inscription on left side of octagonal barrel, metal parts spotted but without large and deep scars. Very well restorable. In original wooden case, inside lined with red cloth, including key and numerous accessories: exchange drum, bullet tongs, powder flask, bullets, damping plugs including punch, spare pistons including key and cleaning utensils. Collectable interesting and complete ensemble.
The Allen & Wheellock company in Worcester, Massachusetts was only in existence from 1857 to 1864, but produced a variety of different firearms, including these revolvers at the very beginning of their operation. Only about 1,000 were manufactured from 1857 to 1861. The single-action revolver impresses with a relatively simple and quick possibility to change the cylinder. The cylinder axle can be unscrewed to the rear and removed, whereupon the fired cylinder can be exchanged for the loaded interchangeable cylinder. An anticipation of the magazine change in self-loading pistols. The loading press is connected to the trigger guard as a lever and can be operated via this.
